WHAT DOES KNOWING MY TRUE NATURE DO FOR ME?
Why go through this investigation of trying to comprehend the infinite? How can this possibly help me or resolve the obstacles I face each day?
It is part of the human experience to be constantly in search of something that is lasting and does not change. Anytime we take an action, we want to gain something that is going to endure. Especially in life pursuits, we want lasting results. We want something that will give us that abiding sense of the limitless. But our pursuits come up short because they are finite. They begin in time and end in time. So, the results also begin in time and end in time. Yet the person who wants the results is not themselves coming and going. If you think about it, the one constant in all of your pursuits is you. That means as you observe your pursuits as they come and go, you are watching all of this yet you, as the one who is watching is not changing. Even though your body and mind are changing. You remain the constant, unchanging presence. You are the subject. You are not the object that changes.
That means you are not subject to time. And if you are not subject to time, then you are limitless. What you seek is infinite. What you are is infinite. In one stroke you solve this problem of seeking and accomplishing that lasting result. Who you are is already infinite, but not yet recognized.
Another way of looking at it is what we would understand in a Western connotation as your spirit. In fact, you are the spirit or the fundamental essence that powers up your body and your mind. That spirit continues, the body stops. The spirit is you the subject, and is therefore not changing, not coming and going even when your own body comes and goes. This spirit is then, infinite.
Then you can take a look at your life and see that no matter what happens in your immediate world, you will never be subject to the changes that come and go.
Good things come, and good things go. Bad things come and bad things go too. You are the infinite, complete essence. When you shift your thinking away from the mindset that I am my mind and I am my body then you become free because all of the things that are changing are not you. Everything that is changing is not affecting you, because nothing can disturb you. You can begin to understand how you are really above it all, in spite of being in the midst of it all. You understand that whether you gain or lose, having the greater objectivity of this vision helps you to generally gain much more readily what you seek. It also facilitates learning from your failures so that even failures provide you with a gain because, only when we fail to learn from a failure is it truly a failure.
Like an actor who plays a role, you can stand unaffected by the part you play in life and perform your various roles in a boundless and limitless way by having a steady and abiding mind.
